The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced plans by government to upgrade selected Category B senior high schools to Category A as part of efforts to improve access and equity in the country’s school placement system.

Speaking at the launch of the ADEA Triennale on Education Conference in Accra, Mr Iddrisu said the initiative seeks to address persistent challenges faced by students and parents during school placements, especially where competition for Category A schools remains extremely high.

“The ministry acknowledges that there is a significant challenge when there are 76,000 vacancies but 393,000 qualified applicants desiring to fill them. The challenge is described as a near impossibility,” he explained.

The Education Minister revealed that the new plan, expected to take effect in 2026, will see at least 10 Category C schools upgraded to Category B, and 10 Category B schools elevated to Category A.

“To address equity and capacity, the minister has discussed with the president a plan for 2026 to convert these schools. This conversion will be backed by infrastructure development, including classroom blocks, dormitories, and quality improvements in teaching and learning materials,” he stated.

Mr Iddrisu emphasized that adequate budgetary support will be crucial for the successful implementation of the project, which is also expected to reduce congestion and enhance teaching and learning in high-demand schools.

The Ministry said the upgrade plan forms part of a broader government strategy to ensure fairness, expand access, and improve quality education delivery across Ghana’s secondary school system.
