The Management of Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) has issued a one-week ultimatum to all mortuaries and funeral facilities owners and operators operating without valid licenses to regularise their operations or risk closure.
A release issued and signed by the MoFFA Registrar on October 22, 2025, reminded operators of such homes of the Agency’s mandate under Part Two of the Health Institutions and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829) to license, control, and regulate all facilities involved in the storage, transportation, and disposal of human remains.
According to the release, several mortuaries and funeral homes continue to operate illegally, which violates Section 55 of Act 829.
Section 55 of Act 829 stipulates that any person who operates a facility without registration or licensing commits an offense and may face a fine or temporary or permanent closure of the facility.
“All operators of facilities and practitioners are by this notice advised to take steps to regularise their operations or risk closure of their facilities,” the statement warned.
The Agency encouraged affected operators to contact its offices at the former Ministry of Health Main Building, Room 22, or reach out through its official phone lines or website — www.moffa.gov.gh — for assistance.
MoFFA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring dignity in death and public health safety under its motto, “Protecting the Living; Dignifying the Dead.”
