President John Dramani Mahama has promised that no journalist will be forced to run into exile for their safety under his leadership, assuring that his administration will protect media freedom and ensure that journalists are able to do their work without intimidation or fear.
President Mahama made this statement on Saturday, November 8, 2025, during his address at the 29th GJA/KGL Media Awards held in Kumasi.
He said the media plays a critical role in Ghana’s democracy and must always be allowed to operate freely. According to him, public office is a trust, and journalists help hold leaders accountable and expose issues that affect the nation.
President Mahama said it is worrying that Ghana’s press freedom rankings have declined in recent years, and his government is working to restore the spirit of media independence that was seen before 2017.
He announced that investigations into acts of violence against journalists during the 2020 and 2024 elections have been completed. A total of 21 suspects have been identified, with some arrested and others still on remand.
The President also stated that he has directed the Ministry of Government Communications and the National Security Ministry to create a permanent platform for engagement between the security services and the media to avoid future incidents.
He stressed that freedom of expression must go with responsibility, accuracy, and fairness, and urged journalists to avoid misinformation and sensationalism.
President Mahama further assured the media that his government will not approve or tolerate attacks, intimidation, or interference against journalists.
He also highlighted his government’s support programs, including the 24-hour economy initiative, the Feed Ghana programme, and the fight against illegal mining.
President Mahama congratulated award winners and encouraged young journalists to stay committed to the truth.
He ended his address by reminding journalists of the famous principle that the press must be watchdogs of the people, not lapdogs of the powerful.
