President John Dramani Mahama, has approved the re-engagement of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu, for an additional two-year term following the recommendation of the Police Council.
The extension, which takes effect from 28th December 2025, comes as the IGP reaches the statutory retirement age in December. Despite the scheduled retirement, the Police Council expressed strong confidence in his leadership, advising that he be retained to consolidate ongoing reforms within the Service.
In an official letter signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama, and addressed to the IGP, the President emphasized that the decision underscores government’s recognition of his critical role in strengthening operational effectiveness and maintaining stability within the Ghana Police Service.
The Council believes the IGP’s continued leadership is vital “to sustaining ongoing reforms, strengthening operational effectiveness, and ensuring stability within the Ghana Police Service at this critical period.”
During the two-year re-engagement period, the IGP will continue to serve in his current capacity and is expected to carry forward major transformation initiatives he has championed in recent years.
The letter further requested that the IGP formally indicate his acceptance of the re-engagement within three days of receiving the communication.
The Presidency concluded the correspondence by extending assurances of its highest consideration to the Inspector-General.
The decision has drawn attention across security and governance circles, with many viewing the extension as a move aimed at preserving continuity in the nation’s internal security architecture ahead of pivotal national developments.
RE-ENGAGEMENT AS INSPECTOR-GENERAL OF POLICE
- I write to inform you that, following the recommendation of the Police Council and in accordance with the relevant provisions governing the administration of the Ghana Police Service, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic, has approved your re-engagement for an additional two (2) years upon the attainment of the statutory retirement age in December 2025.
- Your re-engagement takes effect from 28 December, 2025. During this period, you shall continue to serve as the Inspector-General of Police and discharge the duties and responsibilities attached to the office.
- The President’s decision reflects the Council’s firm conviction that your continued leadership is essential to sustaining ongoing reforms, strengthening operational effectiveness, and ensuring stability within the Ghana Police Service at this critical period.
- You are kindly requested to indicate your acceptance of this re-engagement in writing within three days upon receipt of this letter.
- Please accept, Mr. Inspector-General, the assurances of the highest consideration of His Excellency the President.
