Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to “vigorously attack Hezbollah targets” in Lebanon. The Prime Minister’s Office issued the directive following a surge in cross-border violence that threatens to collapse a fragile diplomatic process. This escalation occurs just two days after a three-week extension of the ceasefire agreement was brokered in the United States. The order signals a significant intensification of Israeli military operations despite the ongoing truce intended to stabilize the border.

IDF Issues Urgent Evacuation Alerts for Southern Villages

The IDF issued a series of urgent warnings this morning, directing residents of southern Lebanon to evacuate specific areas immediately. IDF Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee posted an “URGENT ALERT” on X, specifically naming the villages of Mefdon, Shukin, Yahmar, Arnoun, Zoter Sharqiya, Zoter Gharbiya, and Kafr Tibnit. The warning stated: “In light of the terrorist Hezbollah party violating the ceasefire agreement, the Defense Army is compelled to act against it forcefully.”

Adraee emphasized that the military “does not intend to harm” civilians but urged residents to stay at a distance of “no less than 1000 meters outside the specified area” for their own safety. The alert further cautioned that “anyone present near Hezbollah elements, their facilities, or their combat means is endangering their life.”

Deadly Strikes Reported Across Southern Lebanon

Israeli air raids hit several locations throughout the weekend. A raid in the town of Safad al-Batikh killed two people and wounded 17 others, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. In the Nabatieh district, strikes on a truck and a motorcycle in Yohmor al-Shaqeef killed four additional people. Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) confirmed subsequent strikes in quick succession across Bint Jbeil, Tyre, and Nabatieh. These operations highlight the increasing frequency of strikes in residential and commercial areas, which the IDF maintains are being used for military purposes.

Israel Eliminates Threats in Buffer Zone

The IDF stated it “eliminated” 15 people identified as Hezbollah members over the weekend, including those “posing a threat to the IDF soldiers operating in southern Lebanon.” Military officials reported that three of the deceased were driving “a vehicle loaded with weapons.” Additionally, the Israeli Air Force intercepted a “suspicious aerial target” launched toward Malkia, an incident the IDF labeled “an additional violation of the ceasefire.” The military maintains it will “continue to operate decisively against threats directed at Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers, in accordance with directives from the political echelon.”

Hezbollah Responds with Retaliatory Fire

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for targeting an Israeli army vehicle in Qantara, describing the action as retaliation for Israel “attacking civilians in the town of Yahmar al-Shaqif.” The group maintains that its operations are defensive responses to continued Israeli occupation and large-scale demolitions in southern Lebanon. Both sides continue to trade accusations regarding who first breached the ceasefire terms, with Hezbollah warning that the continued Israeli military presence justifies ongoing “resistance.”

Diplomatic Strains and Ceasefire Violations

The ceasefire, extended Thursday after talks between envoys in Washington, has resulted in a reduction of fire rather than a complete halt. Both sides now argue the other has fundamentally undermined the peace process. While Israel focuses on the disarmament of Hezbollah, the Lebanese government points to the continued occupation of southern territory and the destruction of civilian infrastructure as primary drivers of the instability.

International Outcry Over Journalist Deaths

The Media Freedom Coalition expressed grave concern over the safety of the press, calling attacks on journalists “unacceptable.” “The UK and Finland strongly condemn all violence directed against journalists and media workers,” the coalition co-chairs stated. The statement followed reports that journalist Amal Khalil was killed in an Israeli strike after rescue teams were reportedly blocked from reaching the site for several hours. While Lebanese officials claim Khalil and photographer Zeinab Faraj were deliberately targeted while seeking shelter, the IDF maintains it does not target journalists.

Netanyahu Condemns Saturday Night Security Incident in Washington

Amid these regional tensions, Prime Minister Netanyahu also addressed a high-profile security incident involving U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday night. During the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton, a gunman attempted to breach a security checkpoint, firing at least one shot and forcing the immediate evacuation of the President, the First Lady, and senior Cabinet members.

In a statement shared on social media, the Prime Minister expressed his relief that the American leadership was unharmed. “Sara and I were shocked by the attempted assassination of President @realDonaldTrump last night in Washington, DC,” Netanyahu stated. “We are relieved that the President and the First Lady are safe and strong. We send our wishes for a full and speedy recovery to the wounded police officer and salute the US Secret Service for their swift and decisive action.”

Geopolitical Stakes and the Viability of the Truce

The recent directive to “vigorously attack” underscores the volatile nature of the current truce, where tactical military objectives frequently clash with diplomatic efforts. As both the IDF and Hezbollah maintain a posture of active engagement, the three-week extension faces an immediate test of its viability. The international community remains focused on whether these localized skirmishes will subside or ignite a broader return to full-scale conflict.
