The Moroccan Caftan has been inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list following its approval on Wednesday in New Delhi during the twentieth session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The inscription represents an international recognition of Morocco’s artistic heritage, centuries-old craftsmanship and the country’s commitment to preserving, promoting, and transmitting its traditions.

It also reflects the sustained efforts made by Morocco in safeguarding cultural heritage.

Among Morocco’s diverse cultural expressions, the caftan is considered a cornerstone. Its historical value, rooted in centuries of practice, is matched by its social significance.

A symbol of identity, social cohesion, and regional and cultural diversity, the caftan is regarded as a “total social fact,” involving the community in its design, production, and everyday use.
