The Zongo Chief of Tamale, Sheikh Utalihu Abdul Mummin, has described the launch of the Ummah Constitution as a major milestone toward unity, discipline, and structured leadership within Ghana’s Muslim community. Speaking to the media after a High-Level Muslim Leaders Summit in Accra, Sheikh Abdul Mummin said the gathering, held under the auspices of the National Chief Imam and the Muslim Ummah Supreme Council of Ghana, was both timely and successful.
He noted that the Holy Qur’an enjoins Muslims to remain united and avoid division, stressing that the prevailing disunity within the Ummah made the adoption of a common constitutional framework necessary. According to him, the collective endorsement of the Ummah Constitution marked the summit’s core achievement, as it provides a unified leadership structure and a clear succession roadmap for Muslims in Ghana.
He added that meaningful transformation within the Ummah can only be achieved when Muslims consciously reform their attitudes toward Islam, one another, and the wider society. A member of the Ummah Constitutional Committee, lawyer Abdul Majid Musah, also described the constitution’s adoption as historic and proactive, noting that discussions on a unified leadership framework were previously considered taboo due to sensitivities surrounding succession to the office of the National Chief Imam.
The summit ended with renewed calls for unity, responsibility, and sustained collaboration, with Muslim leaders expressing optimism that the Ummah Constitution, once fully implemented, will strengthen cohesion, promote peace, and secure a better future for Muslims in Ghana. In a related development, Sheikh Abdul Mummin expressed deep concern over the growing involvement of Muslim youth in hard drug use, describing the trend as unfortunate and largely driven by ignorance.
He said a significant number of drug-related cases in Muslim-dominated communities involve young people, posing a serious threat to their future and to society at large. The Zongo Chief revealed that community leaders in Tamale have intensified efforts to combat drug abuse, including the formation of a task force and sustained public education campaigns aimed at protecting the youth and restoring community values.
