Lawyer and former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer Esq has stated his opinion on the extradition process of former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, stating that, Ofori Atta’s decision not to surrender himself for investigation is not considered a crime.
During a panel discussion on JoyNews’ Newsfile today, Mercer stated that, Ofori Atta was entitled to prioritize his health. Speaking however on the issue, the Professor of Political Science and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana Shippers Authority, Ransford Gyampo disagreed, emphasizing the need for accountability among Ghanaians.
Ken Ofori-Atta, is facing corruption-related charges and has been declared a wanted person by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). He has recently been detained by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
President John Dramani Mahama, is pushing for Ofori-Atta’s extradition, with the US Department of Justice and FBI confirming the request isn’t a witch-hunt. Ofori-Atta’s lawyers argue the government’s actions violate his human rights, and he’s filed lawsuits to challenge the OSP’s actions.
