Minister of Government Communications, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, has warned that the government will take action against transport operators who continue to charge high fares despite recent reductions in fuel prices.

‎Speaking during the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday January 14, 2026, Mr. Ofosu Kwakye said some commercial drivers are engaging in unlawful rent-seeking practices by deliberately creating artificial shortages to force passengers to pay more than approved fares.

‎He explained that following sustained fuel price cuts, transport unions agreed to a 15 percent reduction in fares. However, some drivers have refused to load passengers at designated terminals and instead pick them up at selected points where they charge higher amounts.

‎According to the Minister, this practice is illegal and goes against the long-standing agreement between government and transport unions, under which transport fares are reviewed and fixed twice each year unless there are exceptional circumstances.

‎Mr. Ofosu Kwakye said the actions of these drivers are creating unnecessary hardship for commuters and undermining trust in the public transport system.

‎He added that government is working closely with the Transport Minister and relevant agencies to address the situation and ensure that those involved are brought to order.

‎The Minister urged transport operators to stop exploiting passengers and strictly adhere to the agreed fare reductions in the interest of the public.
