Ghana Water Company Limited (GWL) has clarified that they only charge customers for water consumed, as measured by their meters. If no water flows through the meter, it reads zero, and customers aren’t billed.

Public Relations Officer for GWL, Stanley Martey emphasized that claims of no water supply for extended periods with expensive water bills are contradictory, as some water must have flowed if bills are being issued.

He also stated that, there is no motivation for meter readers to increase water bills as the monies do not go into their pockets.

“You consume before we bill and then you have to pay. if water hasn’t gone through your meter, it will not read so the customer care assistant who comes to read the meter will come and pick values that will indicate that no water has flown through your taps so it will read zero and we only bill you for the water that has gone through your meter. The water that you have consumed, that is the only volume of water that we’ll bill you for.
If truly and sincerely, water has not gone through their meter the meters will read zero”, he said.

Addressing the water crisis in Accra on the GTV breakfast show today, Mr. Martey added that GWL does not shut off water supply without informing customers, as this could lead to sanctions from the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC). According to him, GWL announces affected areas beforehand to keep residents informed.

“We do not close taps without informing the people, that is not down anywhere even PURC sanction Ghana Water”, he noted.
