Members of Parliament of Ghana have called for enhanced aviation safety measures and a thorough investigation following the recent microlight aircraft crash in Tema that claimed two lives.

The aircraft, which was travelling from Ho to Accra, crashed on Monday, March 16, resulting in the deaths of two brothers believed to be sons of the founder of the Hebron Prayer Camp.

Reacting to the incident, the Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, urged operators of microlight and private aircraft to strictly adhere to maintenance and safety protocols.

He also called on the Ghana Air Force to collaborate with private aircraft owners to enhance safety and prevent similar incidents.

On his part, the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, called for a full, independent and time-bound investigation into the crash.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, March 19, Mr Afenyo-Markin raised concerns about regulatory oversight and safety compliance in the aviation sector.

“This incident raises serious questions that demand urgent answers. How was a privately owned microlight aircraft allowed to operate over a densely populated corridor with such devastating consequences?” he asked.

He stressed the need for transparency in the investigative process and called for the findings to be made public.

“The Minority respectfully calls on the relevant authorities to conduct a full, transparent, independent and time-bound investigation, with findings detailing the cause of the crash, any lapses in certification, maintenance and operational procedures, and corrective measures to prevent a recurrence,” he said.

Mr Afenyo-Markin also called for support to be extended to the bereaved families.
