Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz has arrived in Ghana ahead of his official unveiling as the new head coach of the Black Stars. The veteran coach touched down at Accra International Airport on Wednesday evening and is expected to stay in an Accra hotel before addressing the media at the Alisa Hotel on Thursday, April 23.
A new era under Queiroz
The Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council, backed by key stakeholders, named Queiroz head coach of the senior national team last week, replacing Otto Addo, who was sacked after a string of disappointing results. The 73‑year‑old will now lead Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, including a challenging Group L that pits them against England, Croatia, and Panama.
World‑stage experience
Queiroz brings a wealth of tournament pedigree, having led Portugal to the 2010 World Cup knockout stages and taken charge of Iran at the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. He has also worked with South Africa’s World Cup qualifiers and held top roles at Real Madrid and Manchester United, giving him extensive experience in high‑pressure, big‑stage environments.
Expectations and early mandate
Despite Ghana’s often merciless football culture, sources close to the camp say there is no immediate pressure on Queiroz, as the GFA focuses on a structured, realistic World Cup build‑up. His first major test will be convincing the squad, local media, and fans that his methods can unlock the talent in a Black Stars generation many believe is already on the rise.
Road to the World Cup
With the official unveiling set for today at the Alisa Hotel, Queiroz is expected to outline his philosophy, backroom staff, and initial plans for upcoming fixtures and the 2026 tournament. Over the next two months, his work in training, tactical organization, and squad cohesion will determine whether the Black Stars capitalize fully on their World Cup return or face yet another short‑stay at the global stage.
