Ghana proudly celebrates a historic milestone in para sport as Tahiru Haruna has officially secured qualification to the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games in the Para Powerlifting Over 72kg category.
Tahiru becomes the first para athlete from Ghana to qualify for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, marking a significant breakthrough for the nation’s Paralympic movement.
His qualification is the result of strong collaboration between the Ghana Olympic Committee and the National Paralympic Committee Ghana (NPC Ghana), demonstrating a unified commitment to advancing inclusive sport and elevating Ghana’s representation on the global stage.
Tahiru earned his qualification following his commendable performance at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, where he showcased impressive strength and determination against world-class competitors. Based on his performance and international ranking, Ghana submitted bipartite applications for two para powerlifters. Tahiru Haruna was awarded the bipartite slot for Team Ghana, and the slot has officially been accepted.
This achievement not only underscores Tahiru’s hard work and resilience but also signals Ghana’s growing competitiveness in international para powerlifting.
Their recent podium finishes further highlight the progress and rising standard of Ghana’s para athletics program.
The Ghana Olympic Committee and NPC Ghana remain committed to providing the necessary support to ensure Ghanaian para athletes compete strongly and proudly at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Tahiru Haruna’s qualification stands as a defining moment for Ghanaian para sport — an inspiration to aspiring athletes and a testament to what can be achieved through dedication, partnership, and national support.
