The University for Development Studies (UDS), has inaugurated five major infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing teaching, learning and the overall academic experience, particularly within its health sciences programmes.
The projects include a modern Nursing and Midwifery Complex, which features an 800-seater auditorium to support large lectures, seminars and academic events. Also commissioned is a state-of-the-art Health Sciences Laboratory Complex equipped with lecture halls and 30 office spaces designed to promote research and innovation.
In addition, the university unveiled a twin-oval multipurpose auditorium complex, with each hall having a 300-seat capacity, making it suitable for lectures, conferences and other academic gatherings.
The fourth project, a fully equipped dental clinic, is expected to significantly strengthen practical training and healthcare delivery.
The ICT complex is seen as a strategic investment, aimed at enhancing Information and Communication Technologies in the school.
The Vice-Chancellor of UDS, Professor Seidu Al-Hassan, described the projects as a major milestone in the university’s quest for excellence in healthcare training and service delivery.
He emphasised that the investments form part of a broader strategy to position UDS as the leading university in Ghana and a competitive institution within the sub-region.
“These facilities will not only improve the quality of teaching and learning, but also enhance our capacity to train highly skilled health professionals to meet the growing needs of the country,” he stated.
Professor Al-Hassan added that the university remains committed to expanding infrastructure and academic programmes to align with global standards.
Established in 1992, the University for Development Studies is known for its unique Third Trimester Field Practical Programme (TTFPP), which integrates academic work with community-based field experience.
The programme allows students to spend a trimester in rural communities, applying theoretical knowledge to address real-life development challenges.
UDS has also built a strong reputation in health sciences education, including medicine, nursing, midwifery and allied health programmes.
Its focus on community-oriented training has contributed significantly to healthcare delivery, particularly in underserved areas across northern Ghana.
