A Cameroonian-born historian, Olivette Otele, has reportedly become Britain’s first black female history Professor.
According to the reports, Madam Otele was awarded the Professorship by Bath Spa University.
In a tweet, Madam Otele said she hopes her appointment would open doors for many hardworking women, especially women of colour and specifically black women in academia.
When History Today asked her what’s the most important lesson history has taught her, Otele said: “Kindness”.
She added: “We exist because many before us have survived hardship and have chosen to share their space, resources and stories. And humility as a scholar: we very rarely discover anything but reinterpret and add to palimpsests.”
