Leaders of West African countries are due to discuss the military coup in Mali at a video conference shortly.

The regional bloc, Ecowas, has already announced Mali’s suspension, along with the closure of its borders.

Ecowas is also considering imposing sanctions on those involved in Tuesday’s coup.

An army colonel, Assimi Goita, has emerged as the new military leader.

France says it will continue its military operations against jihadist forces in Mali despite the ousting of former president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.
