The Daily Graphic says the Ghanaian media’s over-concentration on political issues is a major concern. It says though Article 162 of the constitution guarantees the freedom and independence of the media and also outlaws censorship, the over flooding of the media landscape by private players has shifted focus to unhealthy competition and parochial interests. According to the paper, this has led to a culture of silence with many intellectuals being afraid to speak because of the seemingly entrenched positions taken by some media outlets. With the commemoration of press freedom day yesterday, the Graphic calls on the media to operate in a manner that promotes unity, peace and tolerance.
The Ghanaian Times expresses concern about the effect of the newly announced taxes in the 2021 budget statement on the poor and vulnerable. The paper notes that if taxes become regressive, payers complain due to the increase in prices of food and services which translates into hardship on the people. It cautions government to be watchful because taxes give rise to bribery and corruption among public servants. The paper therefore appeals to government to put in place measures to cushion the poor and vulnerable to enable them to live decent lives. It also calls on capable employers to support their workers with incentives that will help them face the hardship in the system.
