The Institute of Chartered Economists-Ghana (ICEG), is pushing for the proposed Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), and assembly elections to be held simultaneously with the presidential and parliamentary elections next year (2020).

It is the view of the Institute that such an exercise will be a good avenue to control election-related expenses and also prevent the usual friction between the MMDCEs and MPs in the same constituency.

The President of the Institute, Prof. Peter Asuboteng said the practice of decentralisation and local government in the country has raised various pertinent issues such as the mode of district assembly elections; the mode of selecting MMDCEs and the issue of fiscal decentralisation.

He said despite the constitutional injunction against partisan district level elections, ” in practice, the election is clandestinely fought on party lines.
