The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, says government’s vision and budget for its flagship policies like the free Senior High School (SHS) and Planting for Food and Jobs were designed to complement achievements of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the UN.

She said the Akufo-Addo administration did not come out with these flagship programmes to solve the economic challenges of the country alone, but also to bridge the gap of inequality, unemployment, peace and security which are in line with UN global standards.

Madam Ayorkor Botchwey, was speaking at this year’s UN Day celebrations at the forecourt of the State House in Accra.

She, however, noted that the SDGs can only be achieved amidst peace, unity and a conscious effort by all stakeholders on the African continent to rid it of terrorism, political instability and attention to sanitation.

Madam Ayorkor Botchwey, paid tribute to the late Secretary General of the UN, Kofi Annan, describing him as a man of peace and progress. She added that though Kofi Annan is no more, Ghana will continue to contribute tremendously to the UN’s vision of making the world a better place.

The theme for this year’s UN Day is “Making the UN relevant to all people: global leadership and sharing responsibilities for peaceful, equitable and sustainable societies.”
