The Deputy Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Gifty Twum-Ampofo has disclosed that the unwillingness of individual caregivers to disclose deceased relatives who are LEAP beneficiaries for their names to be deleted from the system is a major challenge hampering the intervention.

She observed that this does not pave the way for new entrants to be enrolled unto the LEAP Social intervention System.

Madam Twum Ampofo revealed this in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the Monitoring Exercise on the Ongoing 56th Cycle LEAP Payment to beneficiaries at three cluster communities along the Aburi-Nsawam road in the Akuapem South District of the Eastern Region.

She said the inaccessibility of some communities and network problems, which makes some beneficiaries to travel more than five kilometers to access their benefits, is another challenge.

She however stated that her outfit is working towards addressing this hurdle.

She said LEAP is not color coded but meant for all Ghanaian and a social intervention to assist the needy and the extremely poor in Ghana.

As to why some needy persons get disqualified, Madam Twum-Ampofo explained that an electronic questionnaire is administered to potential beneficiaries, and that one’s qualification onto the programme depends on the answers one gives.

She was hopeful that within the shortest possible time, some of the beneficiaries will be graduated, which is known as the exit plan, where they will be psyched mentally and given some skills training and startup capital and kits to establish and expand their own businesses.

This will make them independent to cater for themselves and their families and be self-reliant so that more people can be added to the programme.
