The Ga West Municipal Assembly (GWMA) has ordered the immediate closure of the Amasaman China Mall following a serious structural incident that occurred at the facility on Sunday, December 28, 2025.
The incident happened at about 6:00pm when a section of the first floor of the mall caved in due to excessive loading. The collapse resulted in fracture injuries to a customer and some workers, raising major public safety concerns.
According to the Assembly, a joint inspection was subsequently carried out by members of the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) together with relevant technical officers of the Assembly. The inspection established that the security, safety, and structural integrity of the mall had been seriously compromised, exposing patrons, workers, and the general public to imminent danger.
In the interest of public safety, management of the Amasaman China Mall has been directed to shut down the facility with immediate effect from Monday, December 29, 2025, at 2:00pm.
The closure will remain in force until specific conditions outlined by the Assembly are fully met.
These conditions include the conduct of a comprehensive structural integrity assessment by a certified structural engineer, the full correction of all identified structural defects, safety lapses, and overloading issues, and a mandatory re-inspection and certification by relevant departments of the Ga West Municipal Assembly. These departments include Physical Planning, Works, Environmental Health, and the Ghana National Fire Service. Additionally, the mall must obtain written safety clearance and authorization from the Assembly before it can be reopened to the public.
The Assembly has further directed management of the facility to fully cooperate with all regulatory agencies during the closure period. It warned that any attempt to operate the mall contrary to the directive will attract sanctions in accordance with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), and other applicable laws.
The directive was signed by the Municipal Chief Executive for Ga West, Hon. John Desmond Sowah Nai, who urged management to treat the matter with the utmost urgency and seriousness in order to safeguard lives and property.
The closure affects the Amasaman China Mall, located in the Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
