Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Mr. Sam Nartey George, has assured the public that internet data prices will drop before the end of the year.
Speaking at an event marking World Telecommunications and Information Society Day, Mr. George addressed growing complaints from Ghanaians about the high cost of internet data.
He admitted that the current prices are too high and said the government is already working on a solution. “My promise was that by the end of this year, we will see prices drop—and my promise remains. Just trust the process,” he said.
Many Ghanaians, especially on social media platforms have been demanding quick action, accusing the government of allowing data costs to rise by more than 39%. In response, Mr. George said lowering prices is not something that can be done overnight.
He explained that the government has set up a committee to find a lasting solution. “I gave the team 14 days to come up with a plan to reduce data prices. They finished the work in 13 days,” he revealed.
According to the Minister, the high data prices are due to problems in the market that have built up over the last eight years. Fixing this, he said, needs a careful and well-thought-out plan.
He called on Ghanaians to be patient while the government follows the roadmap to make internet access more affordable.
