President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana will provide 1,000 scholarships to university students from across West Africa.
He made this announcement during the launch of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) held in Accra on Tuesday April 22, 2025.
President Mahama said the scholarships will allow students from ECOWAS countries to study in Ghanaian universities. According to him, the move is meant to promote unity and strengthen ties among young people in the region.
“This is not just a kind gesture,” the President said. “It is a show of support and a step towards a future where young West Africans see each other as partners, not strangers.”
He also called on ECOWAS to stay focused on peace, dialogue, and cooperation, especially as the region continues to deal with challenges like insecurity and differences among its members.
President Mahama also stated that ECOWAS should become a symbol of African unity and peaceful co-existence, not just a political and economic group.
He reaffirmed Ghana’s strong support for ECOWAS and its values of peace, dialogue, and partnership.
