Energy Ministry Reviews Sanctions On Illegal Electricity Connection

The Energy Ministry is currently reviewing sanctions on illegal electricity connection to make it more punitive.

Sector Minister John Peter Amewu who made this known said Ghana is lossing millions of cedis monthly through the illegal act.

At meeting with officials of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company, (NEDCO), in Tamale, Mr. Amewu called on management of the VRA and ECG to collaborate with his ministry to smoke out officers who are complicit in the act.

The meeting with NEDCO officials is to find out their challenges and how to improve their operations.

Mr. Amewu said under his watch he will not give a breathing space for such ‘criminals’ advising them to desist from it or get punished by the law. He said the issue of illegal connection is of serious concern to the government hence the review of the sanction regime to make it more deterrent.

Without mincing words Mr. Amewu said some of the illegal connection cannot be done without the connivance of some of the officials.

He said said the review is taking into consideration all these and any official from district directors to the top who are find to be accomplice in the illegal act will not be spared.
