An Energy Analyst, Dr. Yussif Suleimana is challenging government to ensure that the Liquefied Natural Gas terminal project under construction in Tema does not provide gas on take and pay basis.
This is to ensure competition in the power sector and prevent stifling of existing power producers.
According to Fitch Solutions, Ghana’s import of liquefied natural gas, LNG will reach 1.2 billion cubic meters this year as the country’s LNG terminal reaches final construction phase. The LNG terminal’s floating regasification unit arrived in Ghana early January.
Operator of the facility, Tema LNG Terminal, expects that it will be operational by the end of the first quarter of this year.
In an interview with GBCNEWS, Energy Analyst, Dr. Yussif Suleimana spoke about how essential LNG is for the power generation market.

The LNG facility is touted as significant for both Ghana and sub-Saharan Africa, as it marks the region’s first offshore LNG import terminal.
Once it becomes functional, Tema LNG Terminal will operate the 350 million dollars project for 12 years, after which the terminal operatorship will be transferred to the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority.
The new terminal has the capacity to import around 2 million metric tonnes of LNG per year.
