Today marks World Wildlife Day to raise awareness on the contribution of the sector to socio-economic and cultural development.
As Ghana joins the rest of the world to celebrate the day, the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission has called on traditional authorities to consider revising taboos and totemic systems, so as to contribute to forest and wildlife conservation.
Celebrating the day under the theme “Forests and livelihoods: sustaining people and planet”, the Wildlife Division is also calling on the Judiciary to issue deterrent court sentences to offenders who impede measures put in place to regulate illegal activities, such as the killing of endangered species.
In an interview with GBC NEWS, Regional Manager of the Commission in charge of the five regions of the North, Joseph Binlinla explained the significance of Wild Life Day.
While outlining activities earmarked to celebrate the day, Mr. Binlinla reiterated the significant role wildlife plays in sustaining human life.
