Ghana and Algeria have signed a visa waiver agreement as part of efforts to strengthen diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two countries.

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the development following an official visit to Algiers, where he held bilateral talks with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf.

According to Mr Ablakwa, the two countries also agreed to increase scholarship opportunities for Ghanaian students in fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and engineering.

Discussions also covered plans for a direct flight between Accra and Algiers, enhanced cooperation in oil and gas, intelligence sharing, and the revival of the Ghana-Algeria Joint Economic Committee.

He described the visit as “exceedingly successful” and expressed gratitude to the Algerian government for what he called “exceptionally warm hospitality and genuine friendship.”

He noted the long-standing ties between Ghana and Algeria, recalling that Ghana was the first country to host the Algerian flag and anthem outside Algeria in the early 1960s.
