The Ghana Journalists Association, GJA, has inaugurated its Ethics and Disciplinary Council, and seven other Committees, to aid in the effective running of the Association.

Speaking at the ceremony, a former President of the GJA, Kabral Blay Amehere, described the Ethics and Disciplinary Council as crucial for the media landscape, as the elections draw near.

This is because the Council will hold journalists responsible and ensure high ethical standards.

Article 42 of the GJA Constitution mandates it to constitute an Ethics and Disciplinary Council, while Article 30 empowers the association to set up a number of committees to aid the National Executive in running the association effectively.

The committees inaugurated include the Membership Vetting Committee, Professional Development Committee, Social Affairs Committee and International Relations Committee. The rest are Finance and Resource Mobilization Committee, Research Committee and Constitution Review Committee.

Membership of the various committees are largely made of past and present media practitioners as well as lawyers and lecturers. Former GJA President Kabral Blay-Amehere singled out the Ethics and Disciplinary Council as essential.

President of the GJA, Rolland Affail Monney called on journalists to develop thick skin in the face of the rising political tensions caused by the voter register saga.

He said the composition of the council and various committees represent a group of competent professionals who were selected based on their proven track record.
