Traditional leaders in the Ashanti region are urging government to speed up the construction of a warehouse in each district as promised to avert possible major post-harvest losses in foodstuff next year (2019).
At separate interactions with the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the chiefs and their elders though were happy that there are signs of food glut particularly in the roots and tubers, plantain as well as some of the grains, the lack of storage facilities for the farmers to keep the excess ahead of the lean season is becoming worrying.
The Minister met with the Traditional Councils of Asante Mampong, Kumasi and Tepa during his two-day working tour to the region.
At the meeting with members of the Kumasi Traditional Council and the Tepamanhene at Tepa, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto was reminded of the urgent need for government to pay particular attention to the construction of feeder roads to enable farmers to cart their produce to the marketing centres to reduce losses.
He urged all farmers and chiefs to join the programme to increase their yields and income.
