Executives and members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), who were joined today, Tuesday, September 16, 2025, by traders and transport unions in Accra’s Cocoa Marketing Board (CMB) enclave, staged a demonstration to drum home their disapproval over the alleged sale of a piece of land which has served as a lorry station for decades.
According to them, the said plots of land are alleged to have been sold to private developers.
The demonstration organised by the Container Owners Association, the Concerned Drivers Association, and the Commercial Transport Operators started near the Ridge Roundabout and proceeded to the Jubilee House, where the leaders of the unions presented a petition to the President.
The protest follows a press conference held on Monday, September 15, 2025, in Accra and addressed by the Deputy Public Relations Officer of GPRTU, Mr. Samuel Amoah.
Mr. Amoah announced the union’s plan for the large-scale demonstration, describing it as the culmination of long-standing grievances over the continuous encroachment on public land intended for vital transport infrastructure.
The unions pleaded with the President to intervene and prevent the encroachment on the land by the private developers.
“We are pleading with President Mahama that enough is enough. We don’t want any of them (private developers) there again. None of them should set foot on that land,” he cautioned.
According to the unions, the alleged encroachment has displaced hundreds of traders and drivers who rely on the station for their daily livelihoods.
They argue that the situation has forced many traders, mostly women, onto the streets, worsening traffic congestion and increasing safety risks in the area.
Receiving the petition from the unions, Presidential Staffer, Bridget Otoo, noted that the government will treat the petition with the seriousness it deserves.
“I want to say we see this as very serious and will attach all the seriousness that this deserves,” she said.
