The Minister for Health, Dr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured the public that the government is fully committed to engaging in dialogue with the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to end their ongoing strike.

Speaking in a press conference on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at the Jubilee house, Dr. Akandoh said the strike, which has disrupted healthcare services across the country, is a result of unresolved discussions on new conditions of service for nurses and midwives. These conditions were signed in May 2024 and are expected to be implemented in July.

“We regret the hardship this strike is causing patients and families,” Dr. Akandoh said. “But I want to stress that the government deeply values the work of nurses and midwives and is working around the clock to resolve the situation through dialogue.”

The Ministry of Health has already held several meetings with the GRNMA to find a fair solution. In the meantime, the ministry is taking steps to reduce the impact of the strike on patients. A list of health facilities with available nursing staff will soon be published to guide the public on where to seek care.

In a move to ease pressure on the health system, the government is also calling on retired nurses and midwives to temporarily volunteer their services. The minister thanked those still working despite the strike and urged others to follow their example in caring for sick patients.
