The Muslim Community in Ghana, particularly the Ahlussuna Wal Jamaa has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his stance on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Bill currently before Parliament, describing it as principled and reflective of Ghana’s moral and cultural values.

In a press statement issued from its national headquarters in Accra and signed by the National Imam, Sheikh Umar Ibrahim, the group praised the President’s commitment to safeguarding what it described as the country’s moral fabric, cultural heritage, and religious principles.

According to the statement, the position taken by President Mahama aligns with teachings from the Qur’an, which caution against practices that deviate from what the group considers the natural order established by Allah. The organization cited specific Qur’anic verses to support its position, emphasizing that the President’s stance defends both Ghanaian cultural values and religious doctrines.

The group also referenced what it described as external pressures on Ghana, including the reported withdrawal of an honorary doctorate by Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. It noted that while such actions may seek to influence the country’s direction, true honor lies in upholding moral convictions and protecting the sanctity of family life.

In addition, Ahlussuna Wal Jamaa lauded President Mahama’s leadership at the United Nations, particularly his role in advocating for the declaration of the transatlantic slave trade as one of the gravest crimes against humanity. The group described the move as a historic achievement that honors the memory of millions of victims and reinforces Ghana’s moral leadership on the global stage.

The statement further affirmed the organization’s support for the President and urged Parliament to expedite the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Bill.

Ahlussuna Wal Jamaa reiterated its commitment to promoting values it says uphold national identity and religious integrity, while encouraging leadership grounded in conviction and accountability.
