The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has commended the Social Media Department of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) for what he described as its exceptional performance in Ghana’s evolving media space, particularly highlighting the dedication of young people many of whom are interns, service personnel, and volunteers driving the Corporation’s digital growth.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin made the remarks when he visited GBC on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, where he donated ten (10) laptops to the Social Media Department and ten (10) desktop computers to the GBC Newsroom.

According to the Minority Leader, his visit exposed him to the depth of work being carried out by the Social Media Department, driven largely by young, energetic staff he described as ambitious, committed, and passionate about public service.
“I saw the excellent work being done by these young Gen Zs,” he said. “Some of them are on attachment, others are doing volunteer work, yet they are so excited about what they do. They come here every day with passion, and the work they are doing is projecting GBC out there.”
He noted that despite limited resources, the Social Media Department has positioned GBC competitively within the media space, standing shoulder to shoulder with private broadcasters in the digital arena.
“You are competing fairly with private broadcasters,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin said. “And this tells me that the future of public broadcasting is strong if we continue to support and empower the young people doing this work.”
The Minority Leader said his support for the Corporation was motivated by his appreciation of the work being done across the institution and the operational needs he observed during his engagements at GBC.
“When I first came here, i observed the tools they use for their work, and I also observed that the Newsroom needed desktop computers,” he said. “So this is my own little contribution to the state broadcaster ten laptops for the Social Media Department and ten desktops for the Newsroom.”
Beyond the donation, Mr Afenyo-Markin used the opportunity to draw attention to the broader challenges facing public institutions, particularly in funding and human resource capacity.
“Government budgets may not be enough to take care of every sector,” he noted. “Those of us who are touched by the spirit must also come to your aid. I pray that God blesses me with more so I can continue to help.”
He further underscored the role of GBC as a pillar of Ghana’s democracy, commending the Corporation for providing a fair and open platform for political discourse across party lines.
“GBC gives political actors the opportunity to freely express their views and advocate their positions. That is good for democracy,” he said. “Whether in government or in opposition, both major political parties have benefited from this platform.”

Receiving the items, the Director of Television at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, Akushika Acquaye, expressed profound appreciation for the Minority Leader’s remarks and support, she noted that the equipment would significantly enhance operations within the Social Media Department and the Newsroom.
The Minority Leader concluded by describing GBC as a partner in national development, emphasizing the need for continued collaboration to strengthen public broadcasting and sustain the efforts of the young people whose work increasingly defines the Corporation’s digital presence.
