The Deputy Director General in charge of Operations at the National Service Authority, Donkor Fuseini has announced that the military training as part of the National Service is voluntary this year giving graduates the option to choose to be a part of it or not however will be mandatory with no option to opt out.
“Graduates have the choice to select yes or no for the military training option when registering but it will be mandatory next year”, he revealed.
Speaking on the GTV’s breakfast show on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, Mr. Fuseni, the introduction of the training as part of the National Service Scheme aims to instill discipline, patriotism, and civic duty in young Ghanaians.
According to him, the program is designed to address the perceived decline in patriotism and civic responsibility among Ghanaians. He noted that in the past, people would stop whatever they were doing to respect the national anthem, but this is no longer the case.
The training program according to him, which will only last for six weeks, will not only include military drills but classroom sessions, workshops, and team-building activities. Participants will undergo intensive military drills, disaster prevention and response training, and other activities designed to promote national development and patriotism.
Speaking on the duration, Mr. Fuseini noted that graduates who participate in the training will have the option to start their service and then break off for the six-week training or complete the training before starting their service.
As the program gets underway, the NSA is optimistic that it will help to instill a sense of patriotism and civic duty in young Ghanaians and prepare them to make a positive contribution to national development.
