The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has begun registration of the Odawna Pedestrian Market fire victims with 115 traders so far registered out of the 170 affected.

The fire outbreak, which destroyed wares running into thousands of cedis, has led to the temporal closure of the Market as officials of the NADMO, Accra Metropolitan Assembly, and the security services are assessing the place to ascertain the cause.

The NADMO Accra Metro Director, Henry Plunge, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said officials were guarding the Market to prevent the traders from entering to hamper the assessment process.

He said they were working with the Market Management to ensure that thieves did not take advantage of the situation adding that the NADMO and AMA officials had hectic time turning away traders who were not affected as they forced to have access to their shops.
“The place would be cleared and one or two measures put in place before the Market would be re-opened,” he said.

He said NADMO had arranged for food items, materials and money to be distributed to the affected traders on or before Monday to enable them to put their lives back on track.

A trader, Abiba Mohammed Muntari, expressed disagreement with the officials over the directive to prevent those not affected by the fire to have access to their shops.
