The National Labour Commission (NLC) has obtained an interim interlocutory injunction from the High Court, preventing the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) and its members from engaging in actions that could be construed as illegal industrial action.
The order, issued by Her Ladyship Priscilla Dikro Otori (MS), Justice of the High Court, on June 5, 2025, stems from an ex-parte application filed by the NLC. The NLC, represented by Counsel Alexander Owusu Jnr. Esq., sought to restrain the GRNMA, its executives, members, employees, and other persons linked to the respondent from any action deemed illegal, specifically those that could result in injuries or restraints on their fundamental freedom, effective immediately.
The injunction, bearing suit number JL/0086/2025, is valid for ten (10) days from the date of issue. The court has further ordered that the application may be repeated on notice to the respondent should the need arise.
This development follows growing tensions regarding labour relations in the health sector. The NLC, as the plaintiff in the case, is tasked with mediating and resolving industrial disputes to ensure industrial peace and harmony in Ghana.
The GRNMA, listed as the defendant, represents a significant portion of Ghana’s healthcare workforce. The injunction’s implications for ongoing negotiations or potential industrial actions by nurses and midwives remain to be seen.
The order was given under the hand and seal of the Registry, Industrial and Labour Division, Accra. The Registrar, Mr. Kwasi Daniels, attested to the document as a certified true copy.
