The Parliament of Ghana, led by Rt. Hon. Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, will officially launch the second edition of the annual Democracy Cup on Thursday, July 24, 2025. The launch event is scheduled for 3pm at the Justice D. F. Annan Auditorium within Parliament House. This event aims to build on the success of the inaugural tournament held last year and further promote national unity and civic engagement through football.
A press release from the Parliamentary Service, signed by the Director of Media Relations, David Sebastian Damoah, revealed that the launch will showcase the two football teams selected to compete in this year’s one-off match. The event will also provide details on the format of the game and other associated activities planned around the tournament. The Democracy Cup was first organized in 2024 as a Parliamentary initiative intended to harness the unifying power of sports for the Ghanaian people.
The inaugural Democracy Cup, held at Accra Sports Stadium in July 2024, saw Kumasi Asante Kotoko emerge victorious against Accra Hearts of Oak, setting a high standard for the competition. “This second edition promises a lot of excitement and surprises and therefore the general public and football fans are encouraged to support and participate in the upcoming game,” the statement read. Organizers hope the event will continue to foster a spirit of togetherness and celebrate Ghana’s democratic achievements.
The Democracy Cup is a key part of Parliament’s broader efforts to connect with citizens beyond legislative duties, using sports as a platform for national celebration and engagement.
