Pope Francis is receiving new treatment in a Rome hospital after doctors found he has a serious lung infection involving multiple bacteria, the Vatican said on Monday.
The 88-year-old pope, who has had past lung problems, was admitted last week for tests related to a respiratory infection. The Vatican now says his condition is more complicated than expected, and doctors have adjusted his treatment.
“The test results show a serious lung infection, so his therapy has been changed,” the Vatican explained. “He will need to stay in the hospital for proper care.”
Despite his illness, the pope slept well, read newspapers, and had breakfast on Monday, according to Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni.
Francis had been busy with meetings and public events before his hospitalization. Doctors have advised him to rest completely. He has also canceled his schedule for the next three days and was unable to lead Sunday’s Angelus prayer, something he has rarely missed in his 12 years as pope.
