Ghana’s Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, addressed the nation on June 10, 2025, concerning the recent increase in data prices within the telecommunications sector. Many Ghanaians have expressed concerns over the rapid rise in data costs, calling for a strategic approach to stabilize and develop the industry. The briefing aimed to clarify the government’s position and plans moving forward in managing data pricing.

During the briefing, Hon. Samuel Nartey George announced that AirtelTigo, Telecel, and MTN will increase their data bundles by 10% to 15% effective Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

“We want the industry to be competitive but it must be healthy,” Hon. George stated, defending the decision to raise prices. He highlighted that the move is part of broader efforts to reform the sector and ensure long-term stability. The minister acknowledged the challenges faced by the industry due to previous mismanagement.

He pointed out that the current situation cannot be rectified overnight, especially considering the eight years of mismanagement under the previous administration. “The recovery from eight years of mismanagement cannot be completed in four months,” he explained, indicating that reforms will take time and patience from all stakeholders.

Concluding his remarks, Samuel Nartey George reassured Ghanaians of his commitment to serving the nation. He expressed his dedication to fixing the issues inherited from the past administration, stating, “My heart is with the people of Ghana. I will serve you with heart, sweat, and blood, and we will fix the mess I have inherited in this ministry.”
