There is uneasy calm at the Tip Toe lane weeks after the closure of stores belonging to Nigerian traders at the place.
The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) forcibly closed down the shops saying the Nigerians have no right to engage in retail business since it contravenes the Ghana Investment Promotion Act.
President Akufo-Addo at his recent encounter with the media repeated earlier calls on GUTA to exercise restraint in their lock down with Nigerian traders in the country.
A visit to the TipToe lane by GBC’s Radio Ghana shows that shops owned by the Nigerian traders are still closed with some of them operating in hide outs. They have agents who direct people to them.
Some of them complained that they cannot continue to hire shops at neck-breaking prices only for them to be locked out.
Traffic at TipToe lane has reduced significantly despite the yuletide boom with items like phone batteries, cover and other accessories relatively scarce since they are mainly sold by the Nigerian traders.
Some Ghanaian operators in the area have condemned GUTA’s intransigence and appealed to them to reconsider their decision in view of ECOWAS protocols which Ghana is championing.
