Waste management company Zoomlion Ghana Limited has issued a public clarification in response to ongoing discussions surrounding its contractual relationship with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), particularly following the release of a letter from the Office of the President dated June 11, 2025.
The company has outlined five key points to provide clarity for the general public, media, and stakeholders.
- Contract Expired—Not Cancelled
Zoomlion confirmed that the contract in question pertains specifically to the YEA Street Sweeping Programme, which was originally scheduled to expire in March 2024, but was granted a six-month extension, ending in September 2024.
“The contract reached its natural expiration and was not terminated or cancelled by government, contrary to certain media reports,” the company stated.
Zoomlion emphasized that its collaboration with successive governments on the YEA module has spanned over 19 years, and this particular expiration should not be misinterpreted as a broader disengagement by the state.
- Full Support for Competitive Procurement
In response to the government’s intention to apply competitive procurement to future sanitation contracts, Zoomlion welcomed the move, reaffirming its readiness to participate.
“The expired YEA contract was competitively procured in 2019. We stand ready to engage in any future processes,” the statement read.
Zoomlion noted its national presence, technical capability, and track record position it strongly to continue delivering quality sanitation services.
- Commitment to Sanitation Workers and Sector Reform
Zoomlion expressed support for government plans to improve the remuneration of frontline sanitation workers and sweepers.
“We are deeply committed to protecting the livelihoods of our sanitation workforce, many of whom rely on this sector for daily income,” the company said.
- Transparency and Accountability Welcomed
The company also welcomed ongoing accountability measures, including audits and verification of past claims related to the YEA contract.
“Transparency, integrity, and value for money are core to our operations. We believe reforms will only strengthen the sector and build public trust,” Zoomlion emphasized.
- Pan-African Recognition for Ghana’s Sanitation Model
Zoomlion highlighted growing interest in its model from across Africa, with over 24 countries engaging the company through MoUs, concession agreements, or feasibility studies.
“Our work in Ghana is now inspiring sustainable sanitation efforts across the continent, showcasing Ghana as a leader in green transformation,” the company added.
Reaffirming Commitment to National Development
Zoomlion concluded by aligning its mission with President John Dramani Mahama’s RESET agenda — focusing on Rebuilding, Equity, Sustainability, Empowerment, and Transformation.
“We remain committed to building a cleaner, greener, and more resilient Ghana, in collaboration with government and all stakeholders.”
