The Accra High Court has sentenced a driver, Bright Boso, to 10 years in prison for pouring acid on his girlfriend. He was convicted after the Court found him guilty of causing harm. The judge, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo pleaded with Civil Society and Philanthropic Organizations to help fund the cost of surgery of the victim who is on the verge of losing her sight. The surgery is estimated at GHC60,000. Before his sentencing Boso pleaded with the Court to pardon him so he could take care of his children and the victim.
According to the facts of the case the victim, who is 24 years old, was staying together with the Convict in a kiosk at the Christian Village in Accra, with their two children.
Senior State Attorney, Selasie Kuwornu said sometime in December 2020, Boso accused the victim of cheating on him with one Gyan who lived in their neighbourhood. She said, on May 11, 2021, Boso and the victim quarrelled over the same issue which prompted her to leave the house in a vehicle heading towards Ashongman Estate. The Prosecutor said Boso followed the victim by joining the same bus. The victim is said to have alighted at the Ashongman Estate last stop and the convict did the same.
The Prosecutor said Boso verbally abused the victim in public and told her that she was cheating on him because she was beautiful and further threatened that she would soon look like an old woman. According to what the Prosecutor said, on May 14, 2021, the Convict returned from work sometime after midnight and poured an acidic liquid on the victim who was then sleeping and stepped out again.
The victim after a few minutes felt a burning sensation and rushed out of the kiosk for help. She was sent to the hospital and was later referred to the Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment.
