The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has urged broadcasters in Ghana to embrace emerging technologies to enhance content creation, production, and distribution, warning that failure to do so could jeopardize the future of the country’s media industry.
Speaking at the Africa Media Bureau in Accra, Sam George stressed that technological transformation is reshaping broadcasting globally and Ghana cannot afford to be left behind.
“To remain competitive, broadcasters must embrace digital transformation, adopt new technologies, and invest in skill development to stay ahead of the curve. I dare say that GTV’s online manager seems to be doing a lot more than their newsroom. He drives a lot more traffic than their newsroom. That’s an adoption of emerging technology.”
Sam George highlighted artificial intelligence, 5G, and hybrid content delivery platforms as key trends redefining how audiences consume information. He emphasized that partnerships with telecom operators, technology providers, and international organizations will be vital to help Ghanaian broadcasters adjust to these changes.
“Globally, broadcasting is undergoing rapid transformation. For Ghana, these developments present both challenges and opportunities,” Mr. George noted. “Equally, our regulatory frameworks must benchmark against the best global practices, ensuring interoperability, safeguarding consumers, and fostering innovation while protecting Ghana’s national interest.”
Sam George also linked technological adoption to broader industry sustainability, pointing to financial pressures facing broadcasters due to high operational costs, fragmented advertising revenues, and competition from digital platforms.
The Africa Media Bureau’s dialogue, which brought together policymakers, regulators, and industry stakeholders, was convened to explore reforms needed to secure Ghana’s broadcasting future.
The Minister concluded with a call for collaboration, saying, “The future of Ghana’s broadcasting sector must be anchored in fairness, innovation, and resilience. Broadcasters must adopt emerging technologies not just to survive but to thrive in the digital age.”
