The National Labour Commission (NLC), in an official statement issued on Friday, June 27, 2025, has ordered the Divisional Union of the National Identification Authority (NIA) under the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) to immediately call off its ongoing strike.

The NLC’s directive follows a hearing held on Thursday, June 26, 2025, during which the Commission engaged both the union and government representatives over the legality of the industrial action.

At the meeting, the NLC ruled that the action initiated by the NIA staff was a violation of labour law, noting that only national unions have the legal mandate to declare strikes.

According to the statement, the NIA Division of PSWU acknowledged the procedural error and apologised.

Despite claims by the union that it had initiated steps to end the strike, the Commission disagreed and maintained that the industrial action was still in force and unlawful, and for that reason, it must be called off immediately.

All parties involved are expected to report back to the Commission on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. to provide updates on the implementation of the directive and the outcome of ongoing engagements.

The NIA Division of the PSWU of TUC (Ghana) declared an indefinite strike on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, over delayed payments of their Operational Support Allowance—the only allowance received by NIA staff to supplement their basic salaries.

However, the NLC, in its statement, revealed that it had received formal notice of the strike from the Divisional Union and had requested clarification on who had authorised the action.

The National Union confirmed that the strike was declared at the divisional level.
