Two communities in the Western Region, Ango and Nmeredane, are appealing to Government to assist them with the provision of social amenities. The communities which have some common challenges such as poor road networks, lack of farming tools, and poor educational infrastructure also have high illiteracy rate in the areas.

This came to light during a visit by some nominees of this year’s Head of State Award to the Communities. The Head of State Award Scheme, otherwise known as HOSA is a non-formal education and learning framework that challenges and equips young people between the ages of 14 and 24 for life and work. It offers a non-formal educational and learning framework that empowers and equips young people to find their true purpose, passion and place in the world.

It enhances the learning opportunities of young people outside the walls of the classroom. Its three award levels of Bronze, Silver and Gold, and four sectional requirements of Community Service, Skills Development, Physical Recreation and Adventurous Journey.

The Award Scheme provides a balanced programme of personal challenge and development. During the visit, it was revealed that Nmeredane lacks electricity, which makes life difficult for them.

Speaking in an interview with GBCGHANAOLINE Rosemary Ackah, who is a bronze nominee of the awards attached to the GBC Radio Newsroom, said she decided to be a part of the awards scheme to benefit from the many opportunities the programme offers.

“I want to be a journalist and I have the interest in reading and broadcasting of NEWS, I also have the interest in going round and picking up information, I, therefore, saw that me being a part of this head of State Awards Scheme will help improve upon my choice of career”

She added, “my stay in the GBC newsroom has helped me a lot, have got to learn how to pick up stories, how to edit, as well as other things a good journalist must know. I have got to build my confidence through this, and as such I have gotten the confidence to speak up to people in public”

She indicated Nmeredane lacks mobile telephony connectivity which makes communication extremely difficult for residents.

“We visited these two communities known as Ango village and Nmeredane when we interviewed most of the people in the village we got to realise that they lack things, that we need in life. They don’t have good roads, the place is a farming community but they lack farming implements”

Miss Ackah who is a form two student of Sekondi College, in the Western Region, is part of bronze group 12 of the Award Scheme which is made up of eight students. She extended appreciation to organizers of the annual Head of state Awards which she says shapes the lives of Ghana’s future leaders.
