The construction of a Harbour at Jamestown, in the Greater Accra Region, is slowly progressing with the February 2023 deadline looming.

Our reporter Nathaniel Nartey who visited the project site nearly 8 months after a previous visit, reports that there was only few workers present.

The few workers who were on site when GBC News arrived, were involved in dredging the sea. One of the reasons for the slow pace of work is as a result of the rains. This became apparent after GBC News toured the project site.

Parts of the site had become waterlogged, contributing to the workers having to wait for the place to dry up before they resumed work.

A Project Engineer, who wanted to remain anonymous noted that most of the workers were on break.

The China-aided project includes the construction of hydraulic structures of about 1,200 meters, as well as office buildings, trading markets, cold storage, processing areas, commercial areas and other production and supporting facilities.

When completed, the vessels will bring almost 400,000 tonnes of goods every year into the country.

It is also expected to boost Ghana’s fishing industry with 26,000 metric tons of fish traded annually while, more than 1,000 local fishermen can ply their trade and berth more than 400 fishing vessels in the port.

The project, which started on Aug. 20, 2020 is expected to be completed on Feb. 20, 2023.
