Ghana’s Interior Minister, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, says the government has deployed armoured buses on major highways across the country as part of efforts to curb highway robbery and improve road safety.

According to him, the buses are being operated under different transport brands to help security agencies monitor movement patterns and track criminal activity along key routes, particularly long-distance highways that have historically been vulnerable to armed attacks.

Speaking during President John Dramani Mahama’s “Resetting Ghana” citizens’ engagement programme in the Savannah Region on Saturday, May 23, 2026, Alhaji Mubarak said the intervention is already yielding positive results.

“One of the major challenges we used to have was on long stretches of road where armed robbers blocked travellers and took their belongings,” he said.

“Today, under the leadership of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, we have acquired armoured buses, and these buses have been doing a wonderful job on most of our long-distance routes because we keep branding them differently,” he added.

The Interior Minister hinted that authorities would continue to change the branding of the buses as part of an operational strategy to improve tracking and disrupt criminal networks.

“We will keep rebranding them to make sure that we get the perpetrators,” he reiterated, adding that the Inspector General of Police and his team were “doing excellently” in ongoing operations against highway robbery gangs.

Mr. Mubarak also highlighted an increase in arrests in recent months and expressed confidence that the initiative would significantly improve safety on the country’s highways.

“We’ve been arresting a lot of highway robbers, and very soon we believe our highways will be much safer than they were before the coming of His Excellency,” he said.
