Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has asked Ghanaians to be patient as the country prepares for a 14.75% increase in electricity tariffs. The new rates will take effect from May 3, 2025.
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) announced the increase to help solve long-standing financial and operational problems in the energy sector. The government says the move is necessary to keep the power supply stable and support ongoing reforms.
Speaking in Accra at a meeting of West African energy ministers, Mr. Jinapor said the decision was difficult but important.
“I want to appeal to Ghanaians and the general public to bear with us,” he said. “These decisions are not easy, but they are needed to make sure we have reliable electricity for our country’s development.”
