Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Mr Adam Mutawakilu, has disclosed that high-level discussions are ongoing to revive the Teshie-Nungua desalination plant.

The plant was shut down in late 2025 due to unpaid debts, contractual disputes, and maintenance challenges, causing persistent water shortages in Teshie, Nungua, Spintex, and surrounding areas. The shutdown placed additional pressure on alternative water sources, with residents often relying on irregular and expensive water tankers.

Speaking to journalists during the launch of the Revenue Arrears Reduction and Electronic Payment Campaign on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, in Accra, Mr Mutawakilu said President John Dramani Mahama had directed key state institutions to collaborate in resolving the impasse and restoring the plant’s operations.

“The president has directed that the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Justice, the Attorney General, Ghana Water Limited, and the shareholders of the desalination plant engage to find a solution. We met on Monday and will be meeting again,” he said.

Mr Mutawakilu expressed optimism that the renewed engagement would likely yield results, providing a lasting solution to the long-standing challenges affecting the plant.
