The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Energy Committee, George Kwame Aboagye, has blamed Ghana’s current power sector challenges on what he describes as the government’s failure to implement a comprehensive energy sector programme inherited during the transition.
Speaking on the GTV Breakfast Show on Wednesday, April 29, Mr. Aboagye said the previous administration handed over a detailed roadmap for the sector, but its implementation had been neglected.
“We handed over an energy sector programme to this government, but its failure to implement it is causing the current problems,” he said.
His comments come amid renewed public concern over frequent power outages in parts of Accra, Kumasi and other regions, with businesses and households reporting disruptions to operations and increased reliance on generators.
According to him, the programme covered key areas including power generation, transmission, distribution and financial restructuring of the sector. He argued that delays or deviations from the plan had worsened liquidity constraints, infrastructure maintenance gaps and supply reliability issues.
Mr. Aboagye also said the roadmap addressed fuel security for thermal plants, reduction of technical and commercial losses at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and the renegotiation of power purchase agreements with independent power producers.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, led by Minister John Abdulai Jinapor, says it is prioritising stable and reliable electricity supply and will roll out an Energy Sector Recovery and Green Transition Plan. The plan is expected to include substation upgrades, renewable energy procurement and expansion of rural electrification.
The Minister has also reaffirmed that “no Ghanaian should be left behind in accessing power” and said government is committed to resolving the challenges “holistically.”
